Reminders!
Hi families!
Today was a great day! Your children are easy to love! My little Eli did super and his babysitter said he was happy all day! Yeah!
I wanted to remind you to remember to have pressed leaves turned in by Thursday. Hopefully, leaves are already collected and pressing by now!
Also, I need to collect the $6.50 for the special Christmas project if your child is doing it.
Spelling is up on spellingcity.com. Look for the list, Owls, and for enrichment words, we will use the "t" enrichment list.
Thanks so much for your support!

Hello kids and families!!
I'm sure by now, you know that I will be back on November 2nd. It's a bittersweet moment for myself and the children. I know that the children must be very attached to Mrs. Barrick and hate to see her go, but yet might be a little excited about what's ahead with me. I, too, am feeling mixed emotions. Staying home with our little Eli has been an absolute joy. It is very hard to leave him, even though he will be in very capable and loving hands, but I love teaching and I feel that it's where I am designed to be. The first week or two might be a little hard with them missing Mrs. Barrick and me missing Eli, but I have a great feeling that it won't take long for us to transition and bond! There are a lot of super fun things ahead as we get into Fall and then the holiday season! I am sending you a paper copy of this post from my blog, but from now on just be sure to check the blog for updates. Please let me know if you are lacking internet access. I will be glad to send you a copy home.
Here is a rundown of what is ahead for the week of November 2nd:
Reading/Science - We will begin one of my favorite units on owls!! We will be reading a book called Owls in the Family. It is a very funny, yet informative book about owls. I will be checking for literal and inferential comprehension each day of the story. The first day of the unit, we will talk about what they already know about owls and read some info about owls and distinguish between facts and myths. My owl unit covers both reading and science PASS skills. We will be doing owl research papers and also be doing a very exciting science project towards the end of our unit!
Math - Pictographs, bar graphs, double bar graphs We will also continue to do daily math practice in the morning as well as multiplication timed tests. Please make sure your child knows his/her math facts. It is so crucial for future math success! The need for mastering the facts will never go away as the children get older, I can assure you! I have taught both 5th and 6th grade and math becomes quite painful for children who do not know their facts. Those facts are built upon with large number multiplication, division, and fractions to name a few. I will teach your child a fun way to practice the facts with a deck of cards, so have a deck of cards handy and have him/her teach you the trick. If he/she is struggling, make sure you practice every day for 10 or 15 minutes. Have him/her earn rewards........anything to get him/her over the hump.
Spelling - Our spelling words for the week will be our Owl Unit vocabulary. I will try to get my spellingcity.com account up and running again so the kids can go online and practice their words. Maybe Mrs. Barrick or last year's teacher used this site, but if you are not familiar with it....it's awesome! I will also put the enrichment words on too.
English - Adjectives We will also continue daily English review in the mornings.
Social Studies - We will begin the week talking about the USA and its regions. We will focus on the NE region...its geography, products, and the states that make it up. I will send home a study guide for the locations of the states and capitals of the NE region. The tests will not happen for a few weeks, but sometimes it helps to start studying early for these kinds of tests! Put the study guide on your frig or in a safe spot. :)
A couple other things: We will be doing a major leaf art project on Friday, November 6th. I have noticed that the trees are absolutely beautiful right now!! Here's some fun homework that is due on November 5th: Go on a leaf hunt with your child. Collect a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors of leaves. Make sure you get several of the same kinds too. Press the leaves after you get home. You might soak them in some warm water for a little while, pat them dry, and then put them in between newspaper with some heavy books on top. The leaves MUST be pressed for the art to work. This project is worth 100 points.
We will be doing an extremely special Christmas project soon. This is a project that I did as a child and my parents still have it. I've had wonderful feedback from parents in previous years! It is a secret because it is a gift from your child to you. :) It is a costly project though, so I need your help. If your child wants to participate, it costs $6.50. Since it is a gift for you, you might want to make your child earn the money.......:). We have to start the project really soon, because it requires sending it off to be processed. If your child wants to do it, please send the money by Nov. 4th. I will be sure and show your child some examples when I get back.
I think that is everything for now, but check back often in case of updates. I will also post pictures on the blog every now and then, if I have a permission slip from you.

Welcome to 4th grade!!
August 10, 2008
Hello!
I’m Mrs. Corderman. I have taught grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th for a total of 17 years. Five of those years have been in 4th grade and I really enjoy this age/grade. I feel the experience I have with teaching several grade levels helps me to know where my students have come from and where they are headed. I look forward to a great year with your child.
Personally, I have been married for 14 years to a dear man named Brian, and we have a precious 12 year old daughter named Baylee. We are also in the process of an international adoption. We are heading to Ethiopia this week to adopt Eli, 6 months old! I will be gone the 1st 9 weeks. Mrs. Barrick will be my substitute. She is a certified teacher and a wonderful person! Your child will learn a lot and be very much cared for in my absence. I would love for your child to be a part of our adoption process by following along on our journey at bringhomeeli.blogspot.com. We so look forward to adding to our family in this miraculous way. We live somewhat in the country and have too many dogs. :) We spend a lot of time outdoors, and enjoy camping and gardening.
I created a website last year. On this blog, I will keep you informed with what is going on in the classroom, as well as my policies and procedures. I am aware that not everyone may have internet access, so I will send home copies of most everything I post on the blog. If you don’t have internet, ask your child to take home our class policy and procedure book for you to go over. I will spend a good many weeks going over the classroom procedures to ensure that the children understand what is expected. This way every child can be successful. I believe that when children know and understand expectations, they feel happier and better about themselves. I also believe we become a family here at school and we need to take care of each other and treat each other with the utmost compassion and respect. I will do my best to make sure that your child feels cared about and safe this year. You can help with this process too, by supporting your child in regards to getting to school on time, making sure your child completes any homework he/she may have, and making sure you keep up to date on what is happening with your child both emotionally and academically.
Because I have outlined my expectations and procedures on my website, as well as a class policy book, I will not be having a parent meeting. If you feel that you would still like to meet personally with me, please let me know. I will be happy to meet with you anytime after school.
The name of my website is cordermansfyi.blogspot.com. I would love to post pictures of the children throughout the year too! Attached is a permission slip if you will allow your child to be photographed and put on the site. No last names will ever be posted. Please sign and return the permission slip whether it is yes or no.
This year your child will be transitioning from learning to read well to reading to learn. Reading is so very important! Please set aside time each week to have your child read aloud to you, as well as time for them to read silently.
This year your child will be learning the geography and history of our 50 states. Have fun at home in learning the locations of the states. Does your child know his/her multiplication facts? Quiz him/her in the car on the way to ball or dance practice. There are a lot of interesting things to learn this year and we will learn them in a fun way!
I will send home papers as they are graded throughout the week. Please check your child’s backpack every day.
Every Friday will be designated Fun Friday. To reward hard work, completed assignments, and good behavior, we will be meeting that day with our kindergarten partners! We will also have a 15 minute recess and a 20 minute center time! If your child has any unfinished work or has had any behavior problems, Fun Friday will be less fun.
One last thing……. I truly believe a child’s brain needs to be fed more than three times a day to be in top learning shape. There is a huge lapse between breakfast and lunch. Therefore, I allow a midmorning snack. Please allow your child to bring a daily snack. Examples of good snacks are: snack crackers (Goldfish, Cheez-Its, etc.), pretzels, celery & peanut butter, fresh fruit or canned fruit, carrots, or any other non, or not too sugary snack. Also, the brain needs to stay hydrated, so they may bring a water bottle.
I know this will be a super year! Working together we can make this a fun year full of academic, social, and emotional growth in which your child feels successful and good about him/herself. If you have any questions, please call me at school, send a note, post a message on the blog, or stop by.

Time to say goodbye...... :(
I'd be crazy to say that I don't love summer because of course I do! On the flip side of that though, is the fact that I have to let go of my kiddos. Please know, they are loved, cherished, and will be missed. You've raised great kids!
This week I will basically be babysitting! Your children are DONE with school, but the school calendar says, "No, we're NOT!" We have a lot to keep us busy though, like: an awards assembly, a volleyball game (teachers vs. 5th graders), Grizzly Day, movies, fun worksheets, a kickball game against Mrs. Rust's class, the K-9 officer, kindergarten buddy activities, cleaning, helping Mrs. C. take apart the room, etc!!!
So long families! May all of you be blessed in all your future endeavors! I will keep you posted on our adoption(s). We should get our call for our African baby any day now!! God Bless you!

Week of 5/11
Wow! Nine more days of school seems unreal! I am sooooooo going to miss my (your) babies! They are sure in my heart. They are such a special group of kids.......each unique and beautiful in their own way. This time of year is so bittersweet for me. The kids are a little higher maintenence because they are restless and ready for summer. I have to keep them busy so they stay out of trouble! The filing and paperwork for me is crazy busy too. That is the part that makes me crave summer myself! Ha! :) On the other hand though, I know it's my last days with these kids and my oh my will I ever miss these sweet babies. My only consolation is that they will still be at Glenwood and I can see them still!
This last week was a good one with our auction and our Friday Celebration. I first wanted to again say thank you for all the great auction donations. We had some awesome items up for bid! Some of the boys were just plain silly though, bidding on girlie items! Oh well! As long as they had fun! We did have a nice talk afterwards about what they learned from our whole economy system. They mentioned: job responsibility, not spending frivolously, saving, working above the normal expectations pays off, getting work turned in on time and keeping your desk clean helps too! I hope that they can take this experience and apply it in the future! We can only hope huh! Thanks also for coming to our Celebration on Friday! It was a wonderful turnout! That meant a lot to your children! They were pretty pumped about it. I was so proud of them. They even came up with the order of events. Treasure those poems, the book, and the profile picture. You and I both know all too well how quickly they grow up. Hold them tightly and Thank God for them because they are true blessings (gifts)!
This week we will have several guest speakers! Yeah...........I can't wait!
Math: We will do math centers that review all the concepts we have covered this year.
Spelling: Done........no more!
English: Done.........no more!
Reading: Never done!!! We will read all week!
Social Studies: West region topics in a reading comprehension format
Science: Heat, Magnets, Weather, Plants, Butterflies
Please remember to send the $5 Leonardo's admission to school by Wednesday. Your child will also need to bring a sack lunch that day as well. There is a gift shop if your child wants to bring extra money. Parent volunteers are $4. Meet us either at the school around 9:30 or at Leonardo's between 9:45 to 10:00. It will be a fuuunnnnnn day!

Week of May 4th
Hey Families! Are you as tired of this dreary, rainy weather as I am? I am so ready for the sunshine!! I want to plant more flowers too! These next few weeks, that will draw our school year to a close, will be quite busy! Here is what this week looks like:
Reading: Literature Circles
Math: Money, Area, and Permimeter - Of course we continue to do a daily review of old concepts.
English: We will finish up our poetry unit. We also do a daily English review.
Spelling: List 30 on spellingcity.com Your child should always have a list to take home as well.
Social Studies: West region topics, Location test on Tuesday, Capital test on Wednesday - Your child should have brought home a study guide last week to put on the frig or other safe spot. Your child should bring home his/her social studies book if that did not happen.
Science: Plants, Butterflies, continued study of physical science. We have learned about solids and liquids and made homemade icecream on "I" day to illustrate a liquid turning into a solid.
Our auction will be on Monday! Yeah! It has been so much fun and very interesting to watch. Some of the kids really get the big picture and have managed to save a lot of money, some not so much. :) Every child will get something at the auction though. The children with the most money, however, will have the biggest buying power! I also gave bonus money to the children who chose to do extra learning or reading. Read Beads, Reading Counts, Spelling Enrichment, and Mastery Club participants all earned extra money! Thanks again for the great donations! You are so appreciated!
Hopefully your child brought home the invitation to our special events for moms. The event is on Friday, May 8th at 12:30. There will be a sign in by the office. Hope you can come!
Please send the $5 admission money for Leonardo's. If you are volunteering, it is a $4 admission as well. Sorry, I think volunteers should be free. Thanks in advance for your promptness in this matter.
The last book orders for the school year went out last Thursday. They are due on Tuesday. There are some great deals on books for summer reading. I highly encourage summer reading!!! The kids (everyone of them) have made super gains this year in not only their reading fluency, but also their reading comprehension. We don't want to lose what has been gained. Don't forget the public library is a great source for books too!
