Week of 12/15!

From green paper circles to..................................

beautiful Christmas trees!! The children worked hard on this project! Hope you enjoy!

This week will find us quite busy!
Reading: We will finish up our Charlotte's Web literature unit with comprehension work along the way.
Math: 2 to 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication We will have a test on Thursday.
Spanish: Mr. Rainey took matters into his own hands and got my cable hooked up to my smart board. This will make viewing Spanish way easier. Because we missed a couple of episodes, we will only test on the part that we covered, which is family members. I will send home a study guide on Monday for our test on Wednesday.
We will be doing a variety of Christmas worksheets that cover topics ranging from logic and reasoning to math story problems and word play. The children will be doing a lot of Christmas projects this week too, with our biggest fun being Polar Pajama Day! Remember kids, wear your PJ's and bring your houseshoes on Tuesday. Parents/volunteers do not have to of course, but can wear your PJ's too! I will be for sure!!
Our Christmas party will be 2:00 on Thursday.
I hope you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas!
ps: Be sure to check back for a slideshow of our gingerbread house making!

Week of 12/08

This week we will begin reading Charlotte's Web together. Every child will have their own copy to follow along with and take turns reading. We will stop every few chapters and complete comprehension checks. I am sure many of the children have seen the movie, but most probably have not read the story. It is a children's classic and written beautifully. I hope they enjoy it! This is the last week for multiplication speed tests. We will also begin large number multiplication tomorrow. I will not let the children use "multiplication fact cheat sheets". I use to let my students use the "cheat sheets", but I discovered they used them as a crutch and never practiced anymore. There are a few of the children who do not know their facts still. If your child is one that doesn't know, please continue to practice daily with him/her. I know it is hard to find the time, but I can't stress enough the importance of it. Please ask your child to show you how to use a deck of cards. We have been using cards for 3 weeks, and some light bulbs are going on! You will see the progress if you continue to practice every day! For science, we will finish up our owl unit this week. We will make a fact book on Monday for your child to take home and study. We will have a test over that info on Wednesday. We will also do some owl research, disect owl pellets (oooo gross, but oh so interesting!), and do an owl craft. In spelling, we will work on contractions. Northeast Region posters are due on Wednesday. In English, we will get to the adverbs we didn't get to 2 weeks ago!

Don't forget to send supplies for the gingerbread houses and Polar PJ day by Wednesday of this week. Thanks to all who have volunteered to help. I have enough helpers now! Yeah! I will have to alter the time of Polar PJ day due to PE and Music schedule changes that are out of my control. I hope that it will not cause a problem. Please let me know if it does. We will now begin at 8:15 and end around 10:30. Gingerbread house time remains the same. (This Friday from 1:00 to 1:45 or so)

The pictures below are of our 1000 Hits to the blog celebration! We celebrated by doing 3 activities related to the number 1000. First, we made a 1000 piece mosaic out of beans, small gravel, and popcorn kernels. We decided 25 of us times 40 equaled 1000, so everyone got 40 pieces to make a mosaic. We also ate 1000 pieces of food! We ate cereal, red hots, cheese crackers, and oyster crackers. Last, but not least, we tried to spend $1000! We learned how to write a check. They learned why we have to do math! It is a life skill! Below the pics, you will find the spelling words for the week!

Week of 12/01

This week in reading, we will finish up Owls in the Family. In math, we will continue with multiplication rotations and speed tests. For social studies, we will work on our northeast region posters, take a NE location test on Wednesday and a NE capitals test on Friday. I sent home a study guide yesterday (11-24) for these tests. In English, we will write to our Adams pen pals and also write to a 3rd grade class in Massachusetts. I will post this week's spelling words on Monday. There will be no more 100 minute reading homework this year (2008). If your child missed a week, this would be the time to make it up. I do take a grade on this homework. I was going to assign it for 2 weeks in December, but decided that December is such a busy month, the children could probably use a break! The week of 11-17 (due Monday, 11-24) was the last week for it.

December is a busy, but wonderful month. We will be doing many Christmas projects! Two of those projects, I need you to help with supplies. If you have not sent the supplies for the gingerbread houses and Polar PJ day, please do so as soon as possible. Gingerbread houses - 1 bag of candy, 6 graham crackers, & 1 round tub of white frosting. Polar PJ day - 1 bar of Ivory soap, 1 box of white sugar cubes. Remember that we will make gingerbread houses on December 12th and have our Polar PJ day on December 16th. We will be doing many more fun things, but those are the 2 that I need volunteers for. I have 1 mom that can help with both days, and 1 mom that can help with Polar PJ day. I still need 4 more volunteers for Polar PJ day and 1 for our gingerbread house day. Gingerbread houses - 1:00 - 1:45 - help with clean up and passing out supplies. Polar PJ day - 9:00 - 11:00 - help with learning stations/crafts. Please let me know as soon as you can, if you can help.

Something else we will work on in the coming weeks, is ARK (ACTS of RANDOM KINDNESS). I feel that we somewhat live in a ME society, meaning what's in it for ME. I want the children to work on doing things for others, and not always thinking of themselves. I hear children for example, say things like: I don't want to pick that up because I didn't leave it there, or If I do this, what am I going to get? I want them to get past the ME/I part and do things simply because it's the right thing to do or it's the kind thing to do. I feel that we need to absolutely praise and reward our children, but not to the extent that it becomes all about extrinsic motivation and there is no evidence of intrinsic motivation. I work on this in my own home with my daughter........trying to find the balance between reward/motivation and simply instilling in Baylee to do things because she should.........it's the right thing to do, not "What am I going to get out of this?" To hopefully help with this thought process, we will be drawing names each week in December. The name that we choose is to be kept secret. All week, we will do nice things secretly for that person. I told the children that the best givers are the ones who give without needing recognition. Nice things could be secretly helping them clean their desk/area, bringing an extra snack, writing a nice note to them. Help us out by brainstorming at home other things we could do. Hopefully, we can all learn a little about giving and kindness in the coming weeks.

If you haven't looked at the previous post and video clip, you might want to. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. God Bless you!

P.S. I wanted to send a Great Big Thank you to Mrs. Howard for sending the awesome OU cookie cake, Mrs. Sturgeon for sending the yummy brownies, and to Mrs. Kang for sending the red chips! You helped make Bedlam Day even better! You rock!

FYI!

Hey! I wanted to share this cute video of some of your adorable children! If you aren't familiar with our classroom economy system, click on the link at the right. I am trying to help your children apply math to real life situatations. Some of them are really starting to understand that saving money pays off! We have 13 home(desk) owners now! They are finding out that not having payments gives them more money each month, which in turn they can spend, but hopefully they will SAVE too. They are realizing that frivolous spending doesn't leave them with much left either! My goal (DREAM) is for them to someday apply these lessons to their own lives and financial habits.

Week of 11/24

Wow! A two day week will be great for us all! These 2 days, we will be doing Thanksgiving related work. We will also read one more chapter of Owls in the Family and be doing multiplication speed tests. We will be having our Bedlam Day on Tuesday. Don't forget that you can send red or orange snacks/drinks for fun that day! Kids need to wear their favorite team color/shirt. We will also be having our pizza party on Tuesday earned from being the top selling fundraiser class!! Go Corderman's Crew!! The kids will still have their regular lunch. We will have our pizza with a football movie at 1:30.

We now have 1000 hits on the blog! Yeah! We will have a 1000 hits party in December. I will let you know when that will be.

Thursday, November 20, 2008

It's Bedlam Time!

Bedlam is coming up! We will have Bedlam Day in the classroom on Tuesday of next week. Make sure to wear your favorite team shirt or color! It would add fun to our day if you would send a Bedlam type snack or an orange or red snack to school to share with the class. We will learn about the history of football, poll the school on their favorite team, and make large graphs depicting the poll info! It will be a fun day!

FYI

I just wanted to let you know of some important dates coming up!

Friday, December 12th - We will be making gingerbread houses! I will need a couple of parent volunteers. We will do the project at 1:00 that day. It usually takes about 45 minutes. I just need some help with passing out stuff and clean up. I also need some parent volunteers to make the ziplock bags of mixed candy to be ready for the project. Those can be made anytime that week.

Tuesday, December 16th - Polar Pajama Day! I need volunteers to help from 9:00 to 11:00 with learning stations. I need 5 or 6 volunteers.

Please let me know by posting a message or sending me a note, if you can help. I greatly appreciate it!

Week of 11/17

Hi Families!

This week in reading, we will continue with our owl unit. We will be reading Owls in the Family and I will be checking for literal and inferential comprehension, as well as working on vocabulary. For our spelling words, we will use vocabulary from the Owls in the Family book. I will post them at the end of this post. For math, we are beginning the all important multiplication! Please, please, please make sure your child knows his/her facts! I can not stress enough how important it is. I am sure many of the children already know their facts, but I can tell many do not. As I have told the kids, this is something that takes work. I can't simply slide the facts into their brains through their ears! If only we could!! If your child does not know the facts, you have got to practice at home with him/her..........over and over every day. Reward your child if you have to. Whatever it takes!! I told the kids that I myself as a young child struggled with learning my facts, but once I learned them, everything else with math seemed to fall into place. My mom thought she was about to die getting me to learn those facts!! We will be taking speed tests every day, and practicing using a variety of manipulations. We will spend about2 weeks on this, before moving on to double digit multiplication, which will lead to even bigger problems, and then we will move on to division. In social studies, we will learn more about the Revolutionary War this week. I will send home a study guide tomorrow for our test over this topic on Thursday. We will also be making northeast region posters this week. In English, we will finish putting our dog report posters together. We typed our info in computer lab last week. Now all the computers are hooked up to the printer, so we can print out the info this week.

Parents, if you have any toy magazines, could you send them to school? I need them for a project next week. Your child can have them back when we are done. Thanks!

Reading Project due tomorrow!

Don't forget that the reading project on setting is due tomorrow. It is worth 200 points.

Today was fun when the SPCA came to visit! Have your kids share what they learned and show you the freebies they got!

I have a teacher friend that has a blog too, and she shared a great idea with me. She suggested that we have a 1000 hits party when our blog counter gets to 1000 hits! I thought that was a great idea! I showed the kids where the blog counter was. We are at 876 right now! Oh so close! If we can get to 1000 in one more week, we will have our 1000 hits party the Monday before Thanksgiving! I will tell you more about the party when we get closer to obtaining it.

I added a word of the day and the game of hangman, as well as the temperature and forecast to the blog. Hope you and your kids enjoy!

Please take a minute to vote on the poll. :)

Week of 11/10

Hey all!

This week starts our unit on Owls! It is one of my favorites! I will be reading the book Owls in the Family. It is a wonderful and funny story. I will be checking for literal and inferential comprehension each day of the story. We will begin the story on Wednesday. The first 2 days of the week, we will be reading some info about owls and distinguishing between facts and myths. Our owl unit will cover both reading and science PASS skills. For math, we will test over our graph unit and study mean, median, mode, and range. Next week begins multiplication! Does your child know his/her facts? If not, he/she needs to learn them this year. It is crucial for future math success! Start studying those facts. Next week, I will give you ideas on how to practice with your child. In social studies, we will begin to cover the history of the Northeast Region. It is very interesting! We will begin to talk about the Revolutionary War and key figures, such as George Washington. On Monday, our very own Mrs. Osgood, who is from Maine, will be our guest speaker! She will give us a better feel for the region! Your child will need to learn the 11 states in the Northeast region too, as well as the capitals of those states. Your child should have brought home a map of those states at the end of last week. Hopefully, you still have it, but I will be sending home a study guide soon. The tests won't be until after Thanksgiving, but it is never too early to learn them! :) In English, we will be finishing up our dog report posters, and work some more on adjectives. Tuesday will be a test over Spanish. I will send home a study guide on Monday for the test. We will also watch the Spanish review on Monday. Spelling, this week, covers months, days, and times in the year. The words will be posted at the bottom of this post, as well as the enrichment words.

Remember no 100 minute reading homework this week. Instead, your child should be working on his/her book project. Hopefully, your child brought the directions home. I will briefly explain the choices:

1) Diorama - create a "setting" scene in a shoebox from your mystery - include a 2 to 3 paragraph description of the scene - you can glue it to the outside of the box

2) 3-D Model - basically the same as the diorama, except on a cardboard piece instead of in a shoebox

3) Map - draw a map of 2 or 3 of your mystery's settings - include a brief description of each setting under the illustrations - include a map key, title, and compass rose

This project is worth 200 points and is due on Friday.

I will be gone to a teacher's workshop on Tuesday, but Mrs. Osgood will be there.

Book orders are due Wednesday.

Week of 11/03

Wow! I can't believe it's November! 2008 has flown by! Halloween is fun, but I am glad it is over! Believe it or not, Halloween Day at school was the best day of the week! The kids were great! I think they were so excited all week about Halloween, they were restless, and when it finally got here, they calmed down. Here is what's ahead:

Math - line plots, line graphs, and coordinates

Reading - vocabulary, mysteries, setting - The children should finish up their mystery books this week. Many already have! They will get a setting project of their choice when they are done. These projects are homework and due next Friday, November 14. This project will count as their reading homework next week instead of the 100 minutes. (100 minutes is still assigned for this week.) Your child should bring home directions for the setting project after they have picked one out.

Spelling - double consonants (I will post the list tomorrow.)

English - dog reports

Social Studies - Northeast region of the US - intro to that region, its geography, products, and the states that make it up

If your child would like to make our Christmas present project, the money ($6.50) is due on Friday.

Pressed leaves are due on Friday as well. The leaves are worth 100 points in science.

I will be contacting the SPCA this week to come visit our classroom. I will have them talk to the children about taking care of pets and also what the SPCA does. We have quite a collection of pet products to donate to them! Thanks to all who donated!

Hopefully, the children will get another 25 fish in the bowl for 25 good and productive days this week. We only need 2 more! If the children earn it, they will get to have show and tell this week! Your child has a class number. If he/she is an odd number, he/she may bring show and tell on Thursday, and then even numbers will go on Friday.

Thanks to all the parents who helped or sent treats for Halloween! The party was great because of you!

I will be posting slideshows this week of new pictures. So be looking!

Week of 10/27

Hi Families! Hope you are enjoying your weekend! I also hope you enjoyed student-led conferences. Your children did so well. I am very proud of them! I'm sure you are too. It was fun for me to watch them with you. Wow! This week will be a full week! I am kind of ready for it! I am so glad Halloween is on a Friday this year! Here is what is on the agenda this week:
Reading - We will be working on vocabulary as well as doing an independent book study. Tomorrow I will have the children check out a mystery book from the library. They will have 2 weeks to complete the mystery. I will allow them time to read in class, but they can read it at home as well. We will be studying the literary element, setting, with this genre. When they complete their book, I will give them a "setting" project to do.
English - Friendly letters, Adjectives
Spelling - "u" sounds
Science - We will finish up our geology unit. The test will be on Thursday. I will send home a study guide on Monday. This test is not a big as the Oklahoma History test, but the kids will still need to take time to study a little each night.
Math - We will begin a unit on graphs. This week we will look at pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots. Please continue to practice telling time and elapsed time with your children. Overall, they did pretty well, and we need to move on, but they will still need some practice at home to retain it.
There will be no social studies this week. Next week, we will begin a unit on the Northeast Region of the United States. The children did awesome on their Oklahoma History test! I am so proud of them! I know that you played a big role in that at home. Thank you for being so supportive in your child's education! It makes all the difference! You should have seen your children's faces when I gave bonus bucks out for good grades (A's, B's, and C's)! They were so proud of themselves. Success breeds success!

Friday, as you know, will be our Halloween Parade at 8:00 and the Halloween party following right after. The children will need to come to school dressed in their costumes. They will need to bring a change of clothes though, for after the parade/party. We will also be having a Read and Feed that day. Your child may bring an extra snack and a drink to school.

Our Christmas present project is coming up. If your child would like to participate, please send cash or check for $6.50 to school by next Friday, November 7th.

This week, I am assigning a fun homework assignment. I want you and your child to go on a leaf hunt! Look for a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Collect at least 10 or 12 leaves. Once you collect them, press them by soaking them in warm water for a few minutes, blot them dry, then press them between newspapers in between books. Press them for about a week. We will be doing a leaf art project next Friday, November 7th. You need to get started pretty quick this week. They do not do well if they are not pressed, so don't procrastinate. I have noticed some of the leaves have turned, not like I had hoped, but maybe enough for you to get a variety of colors. Good luck and have fun!

Here are this week's spelling words:

Conferences coming up!

Just a note about conferences. Your child should bring home a reminder with your conference time on it tomorrow. We will be very busy in the next 2 days getting ready to lead conferences. It is a big thing. Please know how hard your child will prepare for this day and praise him/her big time!! Please also remember that there will be several families in the room at the same time. I've noticed over the years that every family just seems to be in their own little world and it really doesn't matter. I allow this because it is the only way to let everyone take their time and not be rushed. I don't want this to be like traditional conferences where it is "wham bam thank ya sam!". I want the children involved and taking ownership of their grades, behaviors, and choices. I want parents to not feel rushed out the door and to be able to get a clearer picture of their child and what is going on during his/her school day.

Don't forget to send a pumpkin to school by Thursday morning. Thanks!

Week of 10/20

Well, I hope Fall Break provided much enjoyment for your family! My family enjoyed some shopping on Friday, time with my parents in Cushing on Saturday, and catching up with house cleaning and laundry on Sunday! It went fast, but I am ready for school tomorrow!

This week we will continue our geology unit. The kids have brought a lot of rocks in for our rock museum and have been busy researching what kind they are and labeling them! We will continue working on telling time and elapsed time. We will finish our Oklahoma history this week. Tomorrow, I will send home a study guide for the Oklahoma history test on Thursday. I suggest your child study a little each night. We have covered all the information in class, but it is a lot to remember. I know they will do great if they don't procrastinate! Help them to remember that old "time management" skill! :) We will also be learning more about our government and getting voter registration cards filled out for students in grades 3 through 6. Our mock election will be next Tuesday!

Please remember to send a pumpkin to school by Thursday morning. (small as an apple or big as your child can carry) We will be doing science, math, and art with the pumpkins.

I know this is a funny request, but could you send a hammer wrapped up in an old rag or sock to school by Tuesday. We will be cracking open geodes that day. Just tuck the wrapped up hammer down in your child's backpack and we will take it out to use it, then put it back in the backpack! :0 I do this project every year and it is so much fun!

If you have not sent your conference form back, please return it by Tuesday morning.

There will be no spelling on this short week again, but it will resume next week. There will, however, be reading homework. I will give another break on Halloween week, Thanksgiving week, and then in December, we will quit reading homework after the first two weeks of that month. I know the holidays are so busy. I have such readers this year though, that I am sure and I'm hoping, that reading will still be going on! :)

Week of 10/13/08

This will be a short week. I am sure your child is ready for Fall Break! This week we will begin our geology unit! Our geology unit covers language arts skills as well as science skills. It is a very fun unit! Your children may bring special rocks from home to display in our rock museum. They will all get their rocks back. We will start with a study of the earth and its layers. Math this week includes telling time and calendars. We will study elapsed time as well. You can help your child at home by giving them elapsed time questions such as: We will leave for football practice in 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is now 3:05. What time will we leave? Elapsed time is a hard concept for many children, especially those that struggle telling time on a "non-digital" clock. Practice "plain old" telling time too. In social studies, we will be finishing up our Oklahoma Symbols books and taking a quiz on the symbols. We will also take a look at the Dust Bowl.

Soon my children will be hosting a mock election for grades 3 through 6! We will be learning about government and the election process over the next few weeks. Our mock election will be held on October 28th, the Tuesday before the real election. Talk to your child about the presidential candidates and the importance of voting.

Next week, the children need to have their pumpkins to school by October 23rd. That will be our Pumpkin Day. Remember that your child may bring a pumpkin the size of an apple or as big as he/she can carry. We will be doing pumpkin related work in reading, math, science, and art.

Tomorrow, Monday, I will be sending home the conference note. Please send it back on Tuesday. The children seem very excited about these conferences! Boy, do we have a few things planned for you! They are anxious to be the leader, while you sit back and be the listener. Hopefully, you have taken a moment to read some of the research on student-led conferences. If you have not, the link is at the right.

We are doing well on box tops! We also have some donated pet items! Yeah! The kids and I say "Thank you". Some of you have already sent in items for upcoming projects. Thank you. I have started a pile behind our ship! I will let you know when things are due as they come if you would rather wait to send things.

There will be no reading homework or spelling this week.

Have a great week!

Program and other info!

Wasn't the program awesome?! I am so proud of your beautiful children! They have worked so hard for the past 3 weeks and it certainly paid off tonight. I am sure you enjoyed the program as much as me! We are, however, glad that it is over and we can get back to some normalcy! Most of the children have sure missed P.E.!

Remember that next Monday, I will be sending home conference forms.

We will not have spelling or reading homework next week.

The Fall Fundraiser is due tomorrow.

Thanks to all who have sent in boxtops. Keep sending them in as you get them!

Hopefully, the book order will be in tomorrow. Some children did not order their free book (from ordering from the Sept. order). When I send out the November order, I will list the children who still have a free book coming to them and they can pick out one then.

Have a wonderful weekend! I will post again on Sunday about what is ahead for next week!

Conferences Coming Up!

Conferences are coming up the week after next. They will be held on October 23rd and 24th. I do conferencing a little different than most. I have student-led conferences. I have posted the conference letter that will be coming home with your child next Monday. For more information about student-led conferences please see the link at the right.

Dear Parents,
For the last several years, I have held student-led conferences. This is a type of conference where your child gets to be in charge. Your child will greet you with a letter. He/She will go over his/her strengths and weaknesses, as well as his/her report card. He/She will then take you on an adventure in our classroom. You will get to have a chance to take a peek at a typical day in our classroom. I have had wonderful response from both my students and parents using this type of conferencing. It seems to give the children ownership of the choices they make, as well as a chance to analyze themselves on what they are good at and what they struggle at. It gives them focus too. As for parents, it helps you to see your child in a different light. You may walk away having learned something about your child that you didn’t know before. The time during conferencing is a good connecting time. Please cut off and fill out the form and return it to me. If after these student-led conferences, you would like to talk to me personally, please let me know and we can schedule a time to meet.
Respectfully,
Gina Corderman

Week of 10/06/2008

Hi families!

Check out the Turkey Creek School Day slideshow! I am sorry that it is a little fast! It would not let me add another song to lenghten the transitions between pictures, so I would have had to redo it and make two slideshows to slow it down. I don't have time for that! You can click on the play/pause to pause it to look at a picture more closely. We had a ball on that field trip! The kids were so stinkin cute! It was a beautiful day too!

This week will be a crazy one because of the 4th grade program! We will be practicing on stage every day! The program will be a cute one though, that you will enjoy! The dress rehearsal will be at 1:30 and the real deal will be at 6:30, both on Thursday. Please send your child in jeans and tennis shoes. The shirts should be in tomorrow and I will distribute them on Tuesday. The night of the program, please send your child to my classroom at 6:15. You may then find a seat in the gym. After the program, please come to my room to pick your child up.

Here is what's on the agenda for subject matter:

Reading: "How would you react?" scenarios and thought provoking questions

Math: We will finish chapter 4 on algebra.

English: Verbs

Social Studies: Oil in Oklahoma, state symbols

Spelling: sounds of "o" I will post the new list tomorrow.

Science: Next week we will begin a geology unit! Start looking for rocks to bring to school.

Parents please don't forget to encourage 100 minutes reading homework and then sign off on the 100 minute form. If your child did not turn in his/her reading homework folder, then he/she did not get a new 100 minute form. You may sign a note stating that your child read 100 minutes, if you do not have the form. Most of the children are doing an excellent job keeping up with this, but a few are not. I do take 25 points per week for this homework. That amounts to 2 100's per 9 weeks. This could effect your child's reading grade. We will take a break from the 100 minutes homework the week of Fall Break and the week of Halloween.

The book fair is here. The Fall fundraiser is due on the 10th. Please send in boxtops! We are trying to win the Cookie Cake Party!

Planning Ahead

Hey Families!

I wanted to give you a heads up in regards to some projects and events we will be doing in the next 3 months. The holiday season, while bringing anticipation and joy, also brings about stress and expense. For this reason, I thought it would help to let you know what is ahead so that you can plan for things both expense wise and to be a part of.

October: Pumpkin Day will be October 24th. I usually do not need parent volunteers on this day, but each child will need to bring a pumpkin to school. I always tell the children that they can bring a pumpkin the size of an apple or as big as they can carry.

November: We will be making a gift for someone special. This gift is a really neat one. I made one for my parents when I was 11 and my parents still have it! I can't tell you what it is! The cost is around $6.50. I tell the kids that they need to do some extra chores around the house to raise the money themselves since it is usually a parent gift and parents shouldn't have to pay for a gift for themselves!!

December: Gingerbread Houses - We will be making these houses the week of Dec. 15th. Each child will need to bring a container of white frosting, 6 graham crackers, and 1 bag of candy. (No red hots............I still have several bags left over from last year.) This is a very fun day!
Polar Pajama Day - This day will probably be Tuesday, Dec. 16th. The children will get to wear their pajamas and houseshoes. We will be rotating through polar learning stations and watching Polar Express while drinking cocoa and eating s'mores. This too is a very fun day! Your child will need to bring 1 bar of Ivory soap and 1 box of sugar cubes. I will provide the cocoa and s'mores. I will also need parent volunteers that day.

The last thing our class will be asking for is a donation of a pet item. I am reading a story about the life of a stray. It is a very touching story and will make you never look at a stray dog the same way again. This is the reason why my family still has 2 strays! 2 years ago, my class was very moved by this story and wanted to do something for the SPCA. They all decided to bring pet items to school. We had things ranging from dog or cat treats, collars and toys, to dog and cat beds! They did so well bringing things that the SPCA came to visit! They brought some of their dogs and talked to the kids about the shelter and how to take good care of pets. The newspaper even came and took pictures! The kids this year wanted to do the same. If every child donated 1 thing, we would have a big donation! I plan on asking the SPCA to come again!

You can send any of the items except for the pumpkin to school starting now. Please write your child's name on the items with a permanent marker. Remember, I am letting you know early so that you can space the cost of things out during this expensive holiday season. Don't feel like you need to send it all at once, unless you want to. I wrote an itemized list below. Thank you in advance!

*$6.50 cash or check (leave the "To" blank.....I will fill it in with the companies name)
*1 container (round tub) of white frosting
*6 graham crackers (or 1 package)
*1 bag of candy (get creative with what would dress up a gingerbread house......we will all share the candy)
*1 bar of Ivory soap
*1 box of white sugar cubes
*1 pet item (This is purely optional)

The pumpkin can be brought to school starting October 20th.

FYI

Please remember that our Turkey Creek Field Trip is scheduled for Friday. The $3 admission is due. Your child will need to bring a lunch that day as well.

Our 4th grade program is on Thursday, October 9th. The rehearsal is at 1:30 and the actual program is at 6:30. I will give you more info on that later. I want to thank you for being so prompt with the return of the T-shirt order forms and money. I know it was short notice. So sorry about that! Every single child turned in their order form yesterday so we celebrated by having an extra recess for their responsibility! Thanks again!

Week of 9/29/08

Hi all!! It was a busy weekend for my family, but a good one. Hope you enjoyed yours. Last week was a pretty hectic week between hearing tests, pictures, and Apple Day. This week should be a calmer week. :) I wanted to say a special thank you to: Jaycee Booth, Racheal Holsten, Teresa Moore, Linda Tutt, Keylie's friend, and Cooper's grandparents for making Apple Day such a success! I couldn't have done it without you! The children learned many things ranging from weight and circumference to the scientific method. We made homemade applesauce, as did our kindergarten partners, so we had an applesauce picnic in the courtyard. They also carved apple heads. They are drying in our extra bedroom as I type this. They will take a couple of weeks to dry completely, just in time to create a Halloween character! Hope you enjoyed the slideshow of our Apple Day.

This week in math we will study addition properties, equations, and input/output. In reading we will finish up our literature circles. The children are doing very well on their comprehension work and their fluency! Their final assignment with their story will be to create a poster of their favorite part(s). Spelling words will cover the sounds of "i". In English, we will focus on verbs. Social studies topics include Native American removal, cattle drives, moving West, and land runs.

Last week we spent a lot of time learning about and discussing famous people of Oklahoma, including playing a 1 hour long game on Thursday. I am glad to say that it paid off for most of the children! I am very proud of them! The majority of the kids made a "C" to an "A+" on their test! Those are very good grades because this was a hard test, and probably the first major test for most of them. I am glad to see that so many of the kids have good study skills. It is so important! I told the kids on Wednesday that this was a lot of information and that they would need to spend more time than 30 minutes Thursday evening studying. I suggested to them to work on getting familiar with the info on Wednesday as well. Luckily, we won't have tons of big tests like this, however, we will have a few. The next big one will be in a few weeks when we culminate all the Oklahoma history we will have learned. I will give the children a study guide several days before hand. It helps when they pay attention in class too. :)

I will be sending home book orders on Monday. They will be due on Friday. There are a lot of Fall and Halloween stories in this issue to check out! Remember that if your child ordered from the September book order, they get to choose a free book ($4 or under) this time.

Don't forget that our Turkey Creek field trip is scheduled for Friday. It should be a lot of fun! The $3 admission charge is due on Wednesday. The pictures are $7 if you want one. They are very neat pictures. Remember too, that your child will need to bring a sack lunch that day. It is also fun to dress up pioneer style. I usually have about 90% participation in dressing up, but it isn't mandatory.

Spelling and other stuff!

Please remember to send 2 apples to school by Thursday. If anyone can help for 2 hours on Friday morning from 8:30 - 10:30, I would greatly appreciate it. I have one volunteer so far, but one or two more would help tremendously. We will be peeling apples at 8:30, but at 9:00, we will begin our learning centers. We will have a science center, math center, craft center, health center, and art center. A couple of the centers would work better with an adult leader. I understand if you can't. Let me know if you can work it out though.

School pictures will be this Thursday. I sent a picture order form home last Friday.

I also sent midterm grades home last Friday. You can also check your child's progress anytime you want, by getting your child's password and username from the office to log into my online gradebook. It is a great tool to keep yourself up to date on your child.

Week of 9/22/08

Hi Families! Hasn't the weather been beautiful?! Hope you have enjoyed your weekend. Here is what is on the agenda for this week:

Reading - literature circles
Math - problem solving, test review, chapter 3 test over addition, subtraction, and estimation
English - nouns, editing incorrect sentences
Spelling - Look for the new list on the blog tomorrow. The children did fantastic on their spelling test last week! I think they like our new way of doing spelling. They have more choices and if they get 3 spelling assignments done early, they get to play spelling games.
Social Studies - Oklahoma people - Every child will become an expert on someone important to Oklahoma and teach the rest of the class. Each child will create an Oklahoma biographical dictionary. They can use this to study for their test over this topic. The test will be Friday.

Please read the post below the slideshow about our Johnny Appleseed Day.

Apple Day coming up!

Next week will be Johnny Appleseed Day! I am asking each child to bring 2 apples to school by Thursday, September 25th. We will be doing many things related to science, math, English, and art on Friday, September 26th. If any parents can volunteer that morning, it would be awesome! I need parents to help peel, slice, and core apples for homemade applesauce, and to help with apple learning centers. Let me know by post or email, if you can help out!

I sent a letter on Monday about our Turkey Creek School field trip coming up on October 3rd. The $3.00 admission fee is due October 1st. If your child didn't get the note home with the details, let me know.

Monday, September 15, 2008

The children have earned 25 fish! This means they have had 25 good and productive days! We read a story a few weeks ago called Because of Winn Dixie, so I thought it would be fun if we watched the movie and had a popcorn party. Your child may bring a bag of popcorn and a drink (pop is allowed) on Wednesday.

Week of 9/15

Hi students and families!

This week looks like this:

Reading: Literature circles - The children are really enjoying literature circles and doing a terrific job!

Math: estimating sums and differences, adding and subracting large numbers - The kids, overall, struggled with the concept of estimating sums and differences, so we are going over it again this week. If you saw low grades on a couple math papers with that concept, please know that I didn't take a grade on them. Hopefully, this week I can see some light bulbs going on with it!!

Social Studies: early people of Oklahoma

Spanish: We have not started Spanish because they do not have my smartboard hooked up to cable yet. However, this week we will get to start it because I did some searching and found the programs on the internet. If I waited for the technology department, it may be Christmas! They are very behind!

Spelling: Look for the words on the blog tomorrow. We will be having 2 tests weekly, one on Thursday, and one on Friday. If your child gets an A on Thursday, he/she does not have to take the test on Friday.

I wanted to talk to you a little about responsibility and time management. 4th grade is a big growing year in those areas. The work gets harder and the children are learning a lot about how to manage their time wisely and what happens when they don't. Some children breeze through this process quite easily, while others really struggle. I am really working hard to help them along in this process, by giving them cues, such as saying "10 more minutes before we move on"; visuals, such as boards that display due dates of long term assignments, and unfortunately, I have to give consequences as well, when work is not turned in on time. I can assure you, that in time all of this will pay off. Most children get a better idea of how to manage their work and time much better by the 2nd 9 weeks. It is pretty magical how it happens!! As I stated before, some children are already pros at time management. If your child, however, tends to have homework quite often, or seems stressed about the work, it is probably because he/she is struggling in this area.

We have had a lot of sickness going around. If you would like to send your child a bottle of antibacterial hand wash, such as Germ X, please do so. The children can keep a small bottle in their desks.

That is all for now. Remember to look on the blog tomorrow for the spelling list and the enriched spelling list. Your child should bring home a paper list as well, of the regular words.

Thanks to those that donated a bag of candy!! It helps a lot!!!

Needing Flour and Salt!

Don't forget to send 1/2 cup flour mixed with 1/4 cup salt in a ziplock bag to school tomorrow.

Check out the slideshow and the Week of September 8th post below.

Week of Sept. 8th

Don't you love this cool weather?!! I hope we continue to have an early Fall!

Did you get Flat Stanley home? If you can't think of anyone to send him to, let me know. I have about 8 people that would love to have Flat Stanley. Hopefully, we will get a great response from willing participants. It will be quite exciting for the children. Who am I kidding? It will be for me too!! It will be a great opportunity for us all to learn about other places.

This week in social studies, we will begin our study of Oklahoma. We will begin with the lay of the land. We will look at important cities and landforms. Hopefully, by carving out Oklahoma and its landforms with dough, the children will remember it better. Don't forget that maps are due on Wednesday. The children were very excited about this project. I can't wait to see the results! In math, we will be estimating sums and differences and doing large number addition and subtraction problems. For reading, we are beginning literature circles. I love doing literature circles because every child is in a book that fits his/her reading level/lexile. We will have 5 different reading groups. Each group has a different book along with related work. For English, we will spend one more day on ocean animal reports. These reports are due on Thursday. Remember, you can type your child's report as long as he/she does the actual work of the report. Most of the children have almost finished their report in class. A few are completely done. This is a very hard project for many of the kids, because there are so many concepts to remember: turning facts into sentences, capitalization, punctuation, paragraph form, indention, keeping topics separated, etc. They have really worked hard on their reports though. I am very proud of them!! Also in English, we will be looking at common and proper nouns. Look for a copy of this week's spelling list on Monday. Also, we will begin enriched spelling. Enriched spelling is completely optional. It is not a grade. It is simply a reward system and a way for gifted spellers to have a challenge. Not all the children that choose to do enriched spelling are gifted spellers. Some just work really hard and a lot of times do better than my gifted ones. Anyone can do it! We will have 15 words every week with a test on Friday. Each word is worth 1 point and I reward every 10 points.

Thanks for the book orders! We met our goal!! Yeah!!! This means more resources/books for our classroom!

We will be going to Turkey Creek School on October 3rd. It is an old fashioned school set in 1910. The children will spend the day reenacting a typical day 100 years ago. It is a lot of fun. Most of the children get into the spirit by dressing up pioneer style and carrying a tin can for their lunch. I will be sending home a letter about it in a couple of weeks, but I wanted to give you a heads up, incase your child wanted to dress up. This way, you will have time to be thinking about clothing. Dressing up is purely optional, but I do encourage it. It is fun to get into the spirit of it! Ideas: Girls - mid calf dresses with aprons and bonnets, boys - jeans, white t-shirts and suspenders or overalls.

We are running low on candy. If anyone would like to donate a bag of candy, it would be greatly appreciated! I give it out as a reward. Please continue to check the blog for updates. Hope you enjoyed the slideshow of your precious children. There will be more to come in the future. If your child isn't in this slideshow, it is probably because he/she was absent when I took those pictures. Look for slideshows ahead.

Getting ready for dough maps of Oklahoma!

Please send 1/2 cup of flour mixed with a 1/4 cup of salt in a ziplock bag to school by Monday, September 8th. We are beginning our unit on Oklahoma and will be making dough maps of the state next week. If you can help make the dough balls on Monday, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Week of September 2nd!

Hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend! We got together with family and friends for pizza and gocarts one evening and a cookout the next evening. My grandma and sister came down for dinner on Monday as well. It is nice to just relax and enjoy family and friends.

This week for Language Arts/Science, we will finish our ocean study. The highlights of that will be the ocean animal report with illustration and an ocean craft. The children will do their research and writing of the report at school, but if you would like to help them type the final report at home, you may absolutely do so. The report, however, does not have to be typed. It can be neatly written. Spanish begins this week! In math, we will do more rounding and a review of place value including expanded and word form. The children will be given a test on those concepts on Thursday. For social studies, this week ends our study of maps. We will look at population, product, and road maps, as well as study grids on maps to help us find things. I am assigning a FUN map homework assignment on Wednesday that is due next Wednesday, September 10th. Please look for the directions for the map assignment this week. Your child should have them on Wednesday. We will also finish up our Flat Stanley, letter, and journal. We will get him in an envelope ready to be mailed. Hopefully, you have someone to send Flat Stanley to. If you don't, please let me know. I have a couple of people that your child could send him to.

Remember that book orders are due on Wednesday. Hopefully, we can make our $200 goal, so that we can get more books and resources for our classroom! Thanks for your help! We are about half way there!!
