FYI

I sent a note home today about the Leonardo's field trip coming up on Thursday, May 8th. The cost of admission is $4.00 for kids and $3.00 for adult sponsers. Please send the money to school on or before next Tuesday. The children also need to bring a sack lunch that day.

Just a reminder that our power point presentation is this Friday, May 2nd at 10:50 in the library.

Check out the pictures below of what's up for bid at our auction!! I will give the children a Sale Bill to match the number by each item. The exciting news is.............we will have a real auctioneer from Lippard Auctioneers doing the auction!! It will be Friday, May 9th at 8:00!

Week of 04/28/2008

Hope your weekend is going well! This week we will continue our study of the rainforest, do a planting project, work on reducing fractions, and continue our journey westward. The children need to be studying the locations and capitals of the states in the West region. They will have tests next week on that. Hopefully you got the note on the powerpoint presentation to be presented this Friday at 10:45 in the library. I posted about it last Thursday as well. Hope you can come!

Our auction is coming up in less than 2 weeks! I will provide each child a sale bill and post pictures of the items up for bid on the blog, probably by the end of this week. This way the kids will have ideas on what they want to bid on ahead of time. Hopefully that will make the auction run a little smoother! We have a wide range of saved money! Some kids have quite a bit saved, while others have very little. All of their salaries have been real close in amounts, but some children have received several fines throughout the year for leaving messy work areas and/or for not getting their work turned in on time. Some children also spent every dollar they had at the store each month, not looking to the future. On the other hand, many children have went above and beyond what was expected and have earned extra money by doing extra jobs, reading and reporting a lot of books, and learning many mastery club topics! They also spent very little at the store each month and did not get many fines. Several children bought their own desks as well and did not have to pay rent anymore. Every child will be able to bid on and receive an item at the auction, but those that have more money will have more buying power. Real life learning! Hopefully, they will take this lesson with them!

Check out the Turkey Creek pictures below! We had a lot of fun! The children were adorable!

FYI

Midterms went home on Monday. I have received most back with parent signatures. If you have not seen your child's midterms, you need to ask him/her about them. I need them back signed.

The track meet was rained out. So disappointing! It will be rescheduled for May 7th. That is going to be one busy week! We are going to be having the Read-a-Thon on Tuesday, May 6th, the Little Olympics field trip on Wednesday, May 7th, Leonardo's field trip on May 8th, and our class auction on May 9th. Wheww!

Our power point presentation will be on Friday, May 2nd at 10:50 in the Library. There will be a reception for you in our classroom immediately following the presentation. The presentation will last about 15 to 20 minutes and the reception the same. We have to be at lunch at 11:30. Hope you can come! The children are quite excited about their rainforest animal research!

Week of 4/21/2008

Yeah! Testing is over! Now we can have a little fun! This week kicks off our study of the rainforest. We will research rainforest animals in computer lab and present a power point presentation for you sometime next week or the week after. I will let you know soon. Also in science, we will study butterflies and hopefully get a shipment of butterfly larvae in this week! In social studies, we will study westward expansion. The kids will have a Southwest location test and capital test on Thursday. I will test them together because the Southwest region only has 4 states and Oklahoma is one of them! We will have literature circles for reading. We will be reading the Dear America series. The boys will read a story about a boy experiencing the Underground Railroad. The girls will be reading a story about a girl experiencing the time of the Revolutionary War. In math, we will be returning to fractions and going more in-depth with them.

There are 2 field trips scheduled this week. Both were on the April calendar. On Friday, your child should have brought home 2 notes about the field trips. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! Wednesday will be our track meet day. We will get to cheer on the 5th and 6th graders as they compete against other elementary schools. The children can bring money for concession stand items. Most things cost .50 to $1.00. Friday is our 1910 Turkey Creek school day. It should be quite fun for the children. They may dress in pioneer type clothing and they need to bring a lunch. The field trip costs $2.00. Please have the money to school by Tuesday. If your child wants an old time class picture, please send an additional $7.00 in a separate envelope. If you have any questions, please let me know. The notes I sent home are more detailed.

Once again, thanks for all your support! The children had great snacks and worked so hard on the tests! I am so proud of them!! You should be too! Thanks also for those who sent an auction item or more!

REMINDERS!

Don't forget that there is a Midwest location test on Thursday and a Midwest capital test on Friday. I mentioned it in last week's post, but neglected to mention it on this week's post. Sorry. The children have been reminded a few times this week though. Most of them probably will not have a problem with the location test, because they have passed the 50 states test on the computer! Also we have a GAME/READ and FEED tomorrow!

Introducing Annie! She is the newest member of the Corderman household! She is a German Shorthair Pointer. She will be bird hunting with my husband next year(Fall, 2009). She's got a lot of growing and training to do first! She is a sweetie!

The next pictures are of some of the kids with our new classmate, Flat Stanley. We will be mailing him to our 4th grade pen pals this week. We hope they will take pictures with him and send him back to us!

Week of 04/07/2008

This week we will do our final reviews for testing as well as cover a couple of things we haven't covered which are poetry, genres, using resources, and figurative language. Mrs. Coontz will do the lessons on genres and using resources. We are almost to the end of the boring review! The children and I will be glad to see some new and exciting topics to study! Fun things are on the horizon!

Please talk to your child about how he/she is coming on his/her Midwest independent study. These long term projects tell me a lot about your child. Some of the children go after it with a vengeance and are already done 1 week early! Some work at a steady, good pace, while others really struggle with keeping at a reasonable pace. It is quite surprising sometimes which children are which. We have discussed the pacing a lot over these last 2 weeks. Some children have had to miss free time on Fridays because they are behind on things. I feel that it has been a real good lesson on time management. If they are working at a steady pace, they should have completed at least 7 assignments by now. I do take into account the fact that while some children are very bright, they work at a slower rate. My daughter and I both fall into that category. That is why I have made sure they have 2 30 minute times a day to work on this independent work. Many have risen to the challenge! Ask your child how many he/she has done.

I will be sending home a practice test booklet for your child to work in. It is not required, simply suggested.

Have a great week and look at the next post to see what fun events are ahead!

Lots of things coming up! Need Help!

Below is the letter I will send home with your child on Monday, April 7th.

April 6, 2008

Dear Families,
I have 3 big events coming up that I need to tell you about and request your help with.

1. Auction – As you know, we have had an economic system in place in our classroom this year. It has been a great and enriching experience for the kids to learn how our world works. Having job responsibilities, paying rent, or buying a home, learning how to save for the future, paying for mistakes, learning how to delay gratification and wait for things, has all been a rewarding experience for me to watch the children learn. I do have to say that some of the children, I predict, will do very well financially in their future, while others have a little more to learn. It has been funny! Here is where I need your help. Our auction will be on May 9th. The auction is for the kids to spend the money they have managed to save all school year. I have been collecting items all school year for this, but it would really help if you could donate a gently used, or new item for the auction as well. I really want the auction to be fun and special for the kids.

2. Field Trip – We have been pen pals with a 4th grade class at Adams all school year. We have been approved to go on a field trip to Leonardo’s to meet them! We are so excited! The field trip is Thursday, May 8th. We will leave school at about 9:45 and get back about 2:30. I need some parent volunteers to go with us to help supervise a group of 5 children.

3. Testing Snacks – We will be testing on Tuesday, April 15th and Wednesday, April 16th. I would like to give the children juice and snacks after they test. If you could send something, it would be awesome!

If you can help with any of these events, please fill out the bottom portion of this letter and return it to school. The end of this school year is hard for me because I have grown to love your children. They are a very special and sweet group of kids. I will miss them so much. Thank you for all your support this year and for sharing your dear children.

With much appreciation,

Gina Corderman
